Understanding volume

Volume measures the space a solid occupies, in cubic units (m³, cm³) or litres. It always depends on three dimensions.

A complex solid can be split into simple shapes; calculate each volume and add them.

Key formulas

Cube: V = a³

Cuboid: V = L × w × h

Cylinder: V = πr²h

Sphere: V = (4/3)πr³

Cone: V = (1/3)πr²h

Pyramid: V = (1/3) × base area × h

Units and conversions

  • 1 m³ = 1,000 L.
  • 1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³.
  • 1 L = 1 dm³.
  • 1 cm³ = 1 mL.
  • Wrong unit? Convert to the same unit before calculating.

Examples

Cube: a=5 → V=125 cm³.

Cylinder: r=3, h=10 → V≈282.6 cm³.

Sphere: r=4 → V≈268.1 cm³.

Pyramid: base 3×3, h=6 → V=18 cm³.
